Memorial Day
Our Memorial Day ceremony was special for our veterans, who received framed certificates praising them for their service. A special thank you to the Lincoln Way West and Lincoln Way North Air Force Junior ROTC members and Lt. Col. George Ramey.
Spring Planting
Volunteers from HUB International insurance broker donate their time and talents to help with spring planting at Smith Crossing, creating bright, colorful arrangements despite the gloomy weather they encountered for their project.
Ground Breaking
October 20th was exciting for community leaders, residents, staffers and future residents when Smith Crossing broke ground for our $35 million expansion. When completed, this new construction will add 50 percent more capacity to our campus.
Chicago Air & Water Show
Nick Zaglifa (center) parachuted from 13,000 feet to join fellow Smith Crossing residents at this annual August show on Chicago's lakefront. Orland Mayor Dan McLaughlin (next photo, long-sleeve shirt) came by to see the group off.
Enhanced Terrace Blooms
Residents, staff and trustees celebrated completion of our newly enhanced Terrace with a party. Adding appeal are pergolas for shade, trees in giant planter boxes and container gardens blooming along the perimeter.
Founders' Day
Smith Senior Living started a new first Sunday of May tradition in 2009 by marking the May 1, 1924, opening of Smith's first retirement community.
Disaster Preparedness
Our community's emergency procedures, developed by corporate facilities management director Chris August, were successfully tested April 22 with our nearby Police and Fire departments participating.
Honor Flight Chicago Vets
Thanks to Honor Flight Chicago, several of our residents who are WWII veterans visited the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC, that was dedicated in 2004.
